Week 4: ‘I Will Not Be Afraid’ – Kyle Harden

Week 4: ‘I Will Not Be Afraid’ – Kyle Harden

Kyle Harden is the writer behind this week’s track.  He and mixer David Traver bring us a lilting, introspective composition which speaks to the strength of Kyle’s faith.  Take a listen and share it with your friends.

I started writing this song because a friend of my wife’s was staying over at our house who was fearing for her life. There was a lot of awful things happening to her that she had been fighting most of her life. I started to get angry. Not just for her, but just at fear in general. I picked the song back up after the shooting in Orlando. Fear was a very real thing. It still is. Being a person of faith, I hold on to God’s promises. It may seem silly to a lot of people but, with everything going on in the world, a little hope can go a long way.

Week 3: ‘Wherever You Go’ – Shannon Fayth

Week 3: ‘Wherever You Go’ – Shannon Fayth

Our song this week is written by sublime songstress and long time Songs on Sunday collaborator, Shannon Fayth.  Shannon’s offerings to our sessions have always been some of the highlights and this track is no exception

Shannon has perfectly crafted this song in a way which showcases her incredible, soulful voice, supported by a deep deep groove supplied by our talented instrumental collaborators.  THIS is what this project is all about.

This song was first inspired by my best friend moving to California. I was a bit devastated. When it comes to friendship once I’m in that’s it, I’m in. The verses are about past conflict and learning what being a good friend is all about, the pre-choruses are about my good friend moving, and the choruses are about knowing that no matter how far away, or how long the time lapses, it doesn’t really matter; if there is love, then there always will be. I guess I just missed my friend so I wrote a song,  to put it simply.

Week 2: ‘Sax & Violins on TV’ – Rion Smith

Week 2: ‘Sax & Violins on TV’ – Rion Smith

The second week of this session brings us a writing debut from Rion Smith, and a rare opportunity to hear an instrumental track from Songs on Sunday.  Rion and mixer, Cory bring together some great players to give us this funky and deeply atmospheric track.  You can really hear Rion’s influence as a drummer on the driving rhythmic melodies which invoke the feeling that you are being drawn into dark, tense movie score.

Take a listen and share it with your friends.

This actually came about on a long plane flight returning to Orlando.

Garage band on the iPad had some new features, so I messed around with that, and found myself with the better part of a song…

I’m trying to get to a place where I don’t question what comes out when I’m “discovering” melodies. So, while some of this sounded weird or odd to me when I was creating it, I just tried to go with it and make it work.

For me, i’m very new at writing songs in the first place, and I’m still getting used to the idea of myself being a songwriter, or composer. So I decided to throw myself into the mix of “songwriters” at SOS, and see what happens.

The saxophone and violins are actually quite a surprise to me, and took the sonic texture in a whole different direction, one I never would have imagined had I been working alone. So I’m very grateful to everyone who contributed to the project, and helped my little “garage band for iPad tune” come to life!

Week 1: One More – David McLaughlin

Week 1: One More – David McLaughlin

Well, we are back! And what a great way to start.

It is a pleasure to welcome David McLaughlin to our team of collaborators and his first track is fantastic.  It is a beautiful, heartfelt number with a real lilting drive and a melody which really draws you in towards the climax of the song.

We hope you enjoy it as much as us and share it with your friends.

This is a pretty simple track and that was really the aim from the outset for me. In essence the song is about not being listened to, and the frustration that causes so it didn’t seem right to make it complex. The additions from the other guys were incredible, all the touches added were done with such sensitivity and nuance.

Originally the song had no violin and relied more on a heavier guitar driven sound, but the violin became a huge center piece of the track for me. The awesome job Jordan did really adds so much tension and emotion. Plus it makes the Irishman in me happy.

The great thing I’ve found about collaborating like this is each individual voice has the opportunity to be heard, each musician has the space to develop their own ideas and then throw them together in completion. It’s a great way to work, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the rest of the tracks this summer. Excited to see what else comes out!
